Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs lehnte Marlene Dietrich die Nazipropaganda ab und nahm in der Zeit auch keine Filmangebote aus Deutschland an. Sie unterstützte von Paris aus geflüchtete Künstler aus Deutschland und half ihnen sogar, in die USA zu auszuwandern. 1939 nahm Marlene dann selbst die US-amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft an.
Dietrich begann ihre Karriere als Schauspielerin am Theater und in Stummfilmen der Goldenen Zwanziger in Berlin. Der Aufstieg zur internationalen Künstlerin gelang ihr 1930 mit der Hauptrolle in dem Film Der blaue Engel von Regisseur Josef von Sternberg.
