October 24: Mike Esposito, American comics artist ( Marvel Comics, DC Comics) dies at age 83. [79] October 25: Buth, Belgian comics artist ( Thomas Pips ), dies at age 91. [80] October 27: Don Donahue, American comics publisher ( Apex Novelties, one of the instigators of the underground comix movement), dies at age 68.
January 7: Charlie Hebdo shooting: In Paris, terrorists invade the office of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and murder 12 people, injuring 11. They acted out of constant ridicule of the Prophet Muhammad in the magazine's pages. Among the cartoonists murdered that morning are Cabu, Charb, Philippe Honoré, Tignous and Georges Wolinski.

January 26 – March 18: "Misunderestimating the President through Cartoons" at the Political Cartoon Gallery, London, UK.

March 17: A new album of Gaston Lagaffe ( Gomer Goof) by the late André Franquin is announced for the fall of 2022, drawn by Canadian artist Marc Delaf. [7] However, by 16 May, the estate of Franquin, led by his daughter Isabelle, sues publishing company Dupuis over copyright infringement and plagiarism.
