Abraham Gottlob Werner (German: [ˈaːbʁaham ˈɡɔtloːp ˈvɛʁnɐ]; 25 September 1749 – 30 June 1817) was a German geologist who set out an early theory about the stratification of the Earth's crust and propounded a history of the Earth that came to be known as Neptunism.

Abraham Gottlob Werner (* 25. September 1749 in Wehrau; † 30. Juni 1817 in Dresden) war ein deutscher Mineraloge und Geologe. Er ist einer der bedeutendsten Geowissenschaftler der Wissenschaftsgeschichte, der Begründer der Geognosie, des bis weit in das 19. Jahrhundert verwendeten Begriffs für die Lehre vom Bau der Erdkruste und der Gesteine.

Già a 15 anni fu aiuto del padre, ingegnere nelle miniere di Wehrau; negli anni 1769-70 frequentò l'accademia mineraria di Freiberg e nel 1771 l'università di Lipsia.
