Biography. Abu l-Hasan 'Ali b. Isma'il b. Ishaq al-Ash'ari was a descendant of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari and the founder of the Ash'arite school of thought in Islam. He was born in Basra in 260 /873-4. He attended the lectures of Abu 'Ali al-Juba'i when he was young and thus, he was an advocate of Mu'tazili thoughts.
