The Actors Studio / New York. Located in the heart of the Theatre District in New York City, the Studio’s landmark structure on West 44th Street houses offices, rehearsal spaces, the Paul Newman Library, and a 99-seat theatre. Sessions are private, but the theatre opens to the public occasionally when our work is considered ready for an audience.
The Actors Studio Organization. Our membership is bi-coastal, and to support them we maintain two locations. New York is our birthplace and administrative headquarters. History of the Actors Studio. The Actors Studio was founded in 1947 in New York City, by Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford and Robert Lewis. Lee Strasberg became Artistic Director in 1951, and remained so until his death in 1982. In New York, Al Pacino, Harvey Keitel and Ellen Burstyn are Co-Presidents.
