The Fall of Communism On April 11, 1985, Albania’s larger-than-life dictator, Enver Hoxha, passed away after ruling the isolated Balkan state with an iron fist for nearly four decades. His successor, Ramiz Alia, cautiously embarked on economic reforms while maintaining totalitarian control.
