In seguito alla divisione del ducato fra i due figli, Alberto (il Lungo, il Grande) e Giovanni, al primo spettò Brunswick e al secondo Lüneburg. Le divisioni si perpetuarono nei secoli successivi, ma continuò a esistere un unico ducato di Brunswick-Lüneburg, feudo imperiale, le cui parti, fino al Seicento, possono essere definite principati.
