Welcome to Alcuin College! One of York’s first colleges, Alcuin sits on the green and tranquil Siward’s Howe (believed to be the burial site of the Viking Eric Bloodaxe), making it York’s most elevated college. Our namesake was a leading English scholar, clergyman, poet and teacher from York.

Alcuin College is one of the University of York's first colleges, established in 1967 alongside Vanbrugh College. It was officially opened in 1969 by Kenneth Clark, the chancellor of the university. It is located on Siward's Howe, making it the highest elevated college in the university.

Alcuin College accommodation. Located at one of the highest points on Campus West, near the library, Alcuin College is organised in blocks around grassy social squares. The accommodation is all ensuite, with kitchens shared between flats and is conveniently located near the ‘Alcuin Bistro’ and ‘The Kitchen’ cafes.
Alcuin of York (/ ˈ æ l k w ɪ n /; Latin: Flaccus Albinus Alcuinus; c. 735 – 19 May 804) – also called Ealhwine, Alhwin, or Alchoin – was a scholar, clergyman, poet, and teacher from York, Northumbria. He was born around 735 and became the student of Archbishop Ecgbert at York.
