Alexander MacMillan (Scottish Gaelic: Alasdair MacMhaolain; 3 October 1818 – 25 January 1896), born in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland, was a cofounder, in 1843, with his brother Daniel, of Macmillan Publishers in Covent Garden, London.
Alexander Daniel Alan Macmillan, 2nd Earl of Stockton (born 10 October 1943), styled as Viscount Macmillan of Ovenden between 1984 and 1986, is a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He is the eldest son of the Conservative politician Maurice Macmillan and grandson of prime minister Harold Macmillan, 1st Earl of Stockton.

The founders of Macmillan Publishers, brothers Daniel and Alexander Macmillan, started trading at 57 Aldersgate St., London and published their first two books: The Philosophy of Training by A R Craig and The Three Questions: What am I? Whence Came I? Whither do I Go? by William Haig Miller.
Alexander MacMillan was a co-founder, in 1843, with his brother Daniel, of Macmillan Publishers in London. His family were crofters from the Isle of Arran. Alexander was the partner who developed the literary reputation of the company while Daniel took charge of the business and commercial side.
