Alfred Harmsworth (1865-1922), ennobled in 1905 as Lord Northcliffe, was the most influential and controversial British newspaper proprietor of the modern era. He founded the Daily Mail (1896) and the Daily Mirror (1903), the two most successful daily newspapers of the early 20 th century.
