Many have been gridded and have been identified as preparatory pieces for Newton's finished oil paintings.

He left Clare College, Cambridge, after two years without taking a degree and then studied at various art colleges in London, including the School of Animal Painting in Kensington run by Frank Calderon (1865–1943).

At his death, both Newton’s work and the distinctive place he occupied in interwar British art were largely forgotten. Like the people in his paintings, he simply disappeared.
