23 apr 2024 · Alice Guy-Blaché (born July 1, 1873, Paris, France—died March 24, 1968, Mahwah, N.J., U.S.) was a pioneer of the French and American film industries. The first woman director, she is also generally acknowledged to be the first director to film a narrative story.

1 mag 2024 · French pioneer film director Alice Guy was the first woman to direct a film. In the silent era French women directors were highly prominent. Alice Guy-Blaché directed around 700 films and is credited with introducing the narrative form with her film La Fée aux Choux (1896).

In 1896, she wrote and directed La Fée aux Choux (The Fairy of the Cabbages), a short film referring to an old fairy tale. Although Alice's debut has not survived today, it is recognised as the first instance of storytelling in cinematography. Being Irish, anyone championing cabbages is a legend.

While her career started out as merely being the secretary to an inventor, she would go on to be described by The Moving Pictures News in 1911 as “a fine example of what a woman can do if given a square chance in life.”
