Alison Blake came up in 1980, the year that Merton first admitted female students. She acknowledges that the “culture shock was probably mutual.” Besides reading for a Joint Honours in Ancient and Modern History, Alison took full advantage of what Oxford had to offer: rowing, running, drama, music and even enjoying the hearty outdoor life of the Oxford University Officers' Training Corps.
