Alister McGrath is Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at Oxford University, with a particular research interest in the relation of the philosophy of the natural sciences and theological methodology. After undergraduate studies in chemistry at Oxford, my first doctorate from Oxford was in molecular biophysics (1978).

Alister McGrath was raised in a church-going family in Northern Ireland in the 1950s but had no personal faith. He became an atheist in his mid-teens and was drawn towards Marxism. But encounters with what he calls ‘articulate Christians’ at university began to weaken his stance: ‘I began to realise that I’d misunderstood what Christianity was,’ he says.
25 gen 2023 · Christmas preparations were underway all around. Everyone was getting ready for The Next Thing. At the end of October, McGrath, aged 70, retired, relinquishing the Andreas Idreos Professorship of Science and Religion. Officially, he should have retired a year earlier, but squeezed an extra year in to complete a large project.
