Biografia. Figlio dell' omonimo poeta scozzese, si formò come artista prima a Edimburgo, poi a Londra e, infine, in Italia ( Roma e Napoli ), dove fu a bottega da Francesco Solimena ed ebbe modo di conoscere l'opera di Pompeo Batoni, ritrattista molto apprezzato dai nobili inglesi in visita a Roma.

Allan Ramsay (artist) Allan Ramsay (13 October 1713 – 10 August 1784) was a prominent Scottish portrait- painter . Life and career. Ramsay was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the eldest son of Allan Ramsay, poet and author of The Gentle Shepherd.
He became the official painter to George III in 1760, and Principal Painter-in-Ordinary in 1767. His assistants included David Martin, Alexander Nasmyth and Philip Reinagle. Ramsay was a correspondent of Voltaire and Rousseau, and a writer of poetry and essays.
