The American Academy of Arts and Letters is a 300-member honor society whose goal is to "foster, assist, and sustain excellence" in American literature, music, and art. Its fixed number membership is elected for lifetime appointments. Its headquarters is in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City.

First known as the National Institute of Arts and Letters, the American Academy of Arts and Letters was founded in 1898 for the “advancement of art and literature.” The Institute met for the first time in New York City in February 1899 and began electing members that fall.
The American Academy of Arts and Letters has announced the winners of its annual awards, and Fellows and Residents of the American Academy in Rome were well represented among them, with five receiving awards and two being formally inducted into the Academy.
