Joan Plowtwright is excellent as the mother, while the film is commanded by a talented British ensemble. The story is often funny, poignant, and heartbreaking as it tells the wonderful story of one family's strength to endure.
And a Nightingale Sang plot "Lofty Goes To War!" The Second World War, as experienced by a working-class family in Newcastle. The mother is concerned about the bombing over London, especially her beloved church.
