Biografia. Giovanni era figlio di Giovanni Alberto I di Meclemburgo-Schwerin (1525-1576) e di sua moglie, la Duchessa Anna Sofia di Hohenzollern (1527-1591). Egli aveva appena 18 anni alla morte del padre, e per questo la reggenza venne tenuta in suo nome per i 9 anni successivi.

Anna Maria era la secondogenita del duca Adolfo Federico I di Meclemburgo-Schwerin, e della sua prima moglie, Anna Maria di Ostfriesland, figlia del conte Enno III della Frisia orientale. Nei documenti dei primi anni Anna Maria viene citata con un terzo nome, Dorotea , che poi si perde [2] .
