Maximilian Ernest of Austria (17 November 1583 – 18 February 1616), was an Austrian prince member of the House of Habsburg and by birth Archduke of Austria. He was the son of Charles II, Archduke of Austria, in turn, the son of Emperor Ferdinand I, and Maria Anna of Bavaria.

Maximilian was the third child of Emperor Frederick III and Eleonora of Portugal. As the couple’s only surviving son he was groomed from childhood for his future role as ruler. His boyhood was difficult. He witnessed the bitter rivalries within the dynasty, some of which erupted into military conflict at times.
