Qui Compton scoprì il fenomeno della riflessione totale dei raggi-X e la loro polarizzazione completa, che portarono ad un nuovo metodo per la determinazione del numero di elettroni nell’atomo. Fu anche il primo ad ottenere spettri di raggi-X da reticoli e a misurarne la lunghezza d’onda.
Arthur Holly Compton. Premio Nobel per la fisica 1927. Biografia. Intorno al 1913 ha inventato un metodo per dimostrare la rotazione della Terra. Nel 1918 ha studiato lo scattering dei raggi X, mentre nel 1923 ha trovato che la lunghezza d'onda di questi cresce all'aumentare dell'energia degli elettroni liberi incidenti.
In seguito sarà uno dei capisaldi della nuova fisica quantistica. Nel 1923 si trasferì all’Università di Chicago, succedendo nella cattedra di Millikan, e si dimostrò un ottimo insegnante, molto apprezzato e seguito da numerosi studenti coi quali collaborò a molti lavori sui raggi X, ma anche sui raggi cosmici.
