Asim ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab (Arabic: عَاصِم بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنُ الْخَطَّاب, romanized: ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb; c. 628 –c. 689) was the son of Jamila bint Thabit and Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second Rashidun caliph. Asim was also a famous hadith scholar.

Overview. Asim Umar was the U.S.-designated emir (leader) of al-Qaeda’s South Asian affiliate, al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). * The branch was founded in September 2014 by al-Qaeda Emir Ayman al-Zawahiri, who appointed Umar as the group’s leader in a video message in September 2014.
