Lady Augusta De Ameland ( born Murray; 27 January 1761 [1] – 4 March 1830) was a Scottish aristocrat and the first wife of Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, the sixth son of George III. They married on 4 April 1793 in Rome.

The collection of papers numbered GEO/ADD/51 belongs to Lady Augusta Murray (1768-1830), daughter of John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore and Lady Charlotte Stewart, daughter of Alexander, the 6th Earl of Galloway. Lady Augusta is best known for her illegitimate marriage to Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, sixth son of George III, in 1793.
Upon the couple’s eventual split, Augusta went from socialite to social outcast and has been largely forgotten by history – until now. We spoke to Julia Abel Smith, author of Forbidden Wife: The Life and Trials of Lady Augusta Murray, about her research. What first drew you to Augusta’s story?

The forbidden marriage of Lady Augusta Murray. In the evening of 4 April 1793, preparations were being made for a clandestine ceremony in Rome. The wedding of the son of the King of England to the daughter of the Governor of the Bahamas would not only be concealed, it would also be illegal.
9 gen 2020 · Lady Augusta Murray had known Prince Augustus Frederick for only three months but they had already fallen deeply in love and were desperate to be married. However, the Royal Marriages Act forbade such a union without the King’s permission and going ahead with the ceremony would change Augusta’s life forever.
