Augustus John's promiscuity gave rise to rumours that he had fathered as many as 100 children. In later life, John wrote two volumes of autobiography, Chiaroscuro (1952) and Finishing Touches (1964). In old age, although John had ceased to be a moving force in British art, he was still greatly revered, as was demonstrated by the huge show of his work mounted by the Royal Academy in 1954.
Augustus John. John was born in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, the third of four children. A brilliant student at the Slade School of Art (1894-98). He had also studied together with his sister Gwen John in Paris. He was associated with the New English Art Club and the Camden Town Group but remained largely independent from artistic trends and movements.

Augustus John (1878 – 1961) Augustus John is probably best known as a painter of exuberant portraits. Born in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, the younger brother of the artist Gwen John, he studied at the Slade School of Art. Despite being described as a quiet, methodical student, he was hailed as the most brilliant draughtsman of his generation.
