Benjamin Jowett (/ ˈ dʒ oʊ ɪ t /, modern variant / ˈ dʒ aʊ ɪ t /; 15 April 1817 – 1 October 1893) was an English writer, tutor, administrative reformer in the University of Oxford, theologian, Anglican cleric, and translator of Plato and Thucydides.

Several editions of Jowett’s translation of Plato’s Republic were published in his lifetime, and many since. This text attempts to capture all that is of value in the early versions. It is based largely on the third edition, “revised and corrected throughout,” of 1888, but incorporating the complete Stephanus numbering that is found only in a two-volume version published in 1908.

Benjamin Jowett was born in Camberwell on 15 April 1817. He was the son of a small businessman and was educated at St Paul's School. He entered Balliol as a scholar in October 1836, and spent virtually the whole of the rest of his life in the college, of which he became master in 1870.
