Betty Shabazz (born Betty Dean Sanders; May 28, 1934/1936 – June 23, 1997), also known as Betty X, was an American educator and civil rights advocate. She was married to Malcolm X. Shabazz grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where her foster parents largely sheltered her from racism.

Betty Shabazz (born May 28, 1936, Detroit, Mich., U.S.—died June 23, 1997, Bronx, N.Y.) was an American educator and civil rights activist, who is perhaps best known as the wife of slain Black nationalist leader Malcolm X. Sanders was raised in Detroit by adoptive parents in a comfortable middle-class home and was active in a Methodist church.
