Bille August samarbeidet for andre gang med Bjarne Reuter på manuset til Zappa, basert på Reuters roman med samme tittel. Filmen hadde premiere i 1983 og handler om tre unge gutter på 1960-tallet. Den ble godt mottatt, og filmfotografen Jan Weincke mottok en Bodil for beste foto. Etter Zappa fortsatte Bille August å filmatisere Reuters bøker.
