Bindusara (320 BCE – 273 BCE) (r. c. 297 – c. 273 BCE) was the second Mauryan emperor of Magadha in Ancient India. The ancient Greco-Roman writers called him Amitrochates, a name likely derived from his Sanskrit title Amitraghāta ("slayer of enemies").

Bindusara, just 22 years old, inherited a large empire that consisted of what is now, Northern, Central and Eastern parts of India along with parts of Afghanistan and Baluchistan. Bindusara extended this empire to the southern part of India, as far as what is now known as Karnataka.
While legends suggest that Bindusara disliked Ashoka's ugly appearance, they also state that Bindusara gave him important responsibilities, such as suppressing a revolt in Takshashila (according to north Indian tradition) and governing Ujjain (according to Sri Lankan tradition).

Bindusara was the second ruler of the Mauryan dynasty and the son of Chandragupta Maurya, the founder of the Mauryan Empire. Though he ruled the large empire for a long period of 25 years, there has been very little mentioned in the historical texts as compared to other rulers of ancient India.
Bimbisara was the son of Bhattiya, a chieftain. He ascended to throne at the age of 15 in 543 BCE. [15] He established the Haryanka dynasty and laid the foundations of Magadha with the fortification of a village, which later became the city of Pataliputra. [16] Bimbisara's first capital was at Girivraja (identified with Rajagriha ).

He was the son of Chandragupta Maurya, the founder of the Mauryan dynasty who was guided by the famous Indian teacher, economist and philosopher Chanakya, regarded as pioneer of political science and economics in India, in establishing the Maurya Empire.
