  1. Zenkei Blanche Hartman (née Gelders; 1926 – May 13, 2016) was a Soto Zen teacher practicing in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki. From 1996 to 2002 she served two terms as co-abbess of the San Francisco Zen Center. She was the first woman to assume such a leadership position at the center.

  2. 13 mag 2016 · San Francisco Zen Center (SFZC) mourns the loss of its Senior Dharma Teacher Zenkei Blanche Hartman. A Zen pioneer and former abbess of San Francisco Zen Center, Blanche Hartman was one of the first women to lead a Zen training temple outside of Asia.

  3. A practitioner of Zen for nearly half a century, Ms. Hartman was drawn to the faith after a series of protest demonstrations at San Francisco State University in the 1960s.

  4. Zenkei Blanche Hartman began sitting in 1969 at the Berkeley Zen Center with Sojun Mel Weitsman and in San Francisco with Suzuki Roshi. She was priest ordained in 1977 by Zentatsu Baker Roshi and received dharma transmission with Sojun in 1988.

  5. Zenkei Blanche Hartman died peacefully at 12:30am the morning of May 13 at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco surrounded by her family. She was 90 years and five days old. All three Zen Center temples rang the densho bell 108 times and held ceremonies to acknowledge her passing over.
