In bioinformatica, BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool, ovvero strumento di ricerca di allineamento locale) è un algoritmo usato per comparare le informazioni contenute nelle strutture biologiche primarie, come ad esempio le sequenze proteiche o le sequenze nucleotidiche delle molecole di DNA.
Perché usare BLAST? BLAST è fondamentale per capire la relazione di una sequenza query con altre proteine o sequenze di DNA note. I suoi utilizzi comprendono: • individuare ortologhi e paraloghi • scoperta di nuovi geni o proteine • scoperta di varianti di geni o proteine noti • lo studio delle expressed sequence tags (EST)
