18 dic 2020 · Bona Sforza was the daughter of Gian Galeazzo Sforza, the Duke of Milan and his beautiful wife Isabella d’Aragona of Naples. Bona’s father died shortly after her birth in 1494, at the same time, Italy was engulfed in the series of wars between the French Valois kings and the powerful Austrian Habsburgs. Bona Sforza, daughter of the duke of Milan, married Sigismund I, king of Poland, in 1518. At Sigismund’s death in 1548 she returned to Italy, where she died in 1557. The cameo is inlaid with gold that enhances details of Bona’s chain and hairnet, and a silver Medusa’s head (see detail; for Medusa, see also fig. 59) is inset on her breast, in the same spirit of jewelry within jewelry.

Quella falda riuscì a dissetare gratuitamente per oltre tre secoli i baresi, fino alla chiusura del pozzo per inquinamento nei primi anni del novecento, giusto in tempo per l’arrivo dell’acqua del Sele grazie all’acquedotto pugliese inaugurato nel 1915.
