It has passages of dark humor, but life in the ambulance is not zany; even when Tom and Jimmy do funny or crazy things, it is because of a desperation that begins as a sort of thrumming beneath the action and ends as raw desperation.

There he is teamed with a supremely confident vet who seemingly has gone through a large number of partners. Initially the novice is awed by the more experienced man's capabilities to deal with the high pressure situations they encounter.
One of the great unsung indie drama thriller sleeper gems of the 1990's, this film about two paramedics who embark on a downward spiral of drug addiction and self-destruction due to the high pressure nature of their thankless job packs an incredibly potent emotional punch.
