Erst seit der Gründung Neuöttings (wohl im Jahr 1224), verwendet man die Bezeichnung Altötting. Bereits 748 war der Ort eine Pfalz der Agilolfinger, Herzöge von Bayern. Vierzig Jahre später wurde Altötting karolingische Königspfalz. Aus dieser Zeit stammt vermutlich auch der älteste Bau der heutigen Wallfahrtskirche.
