Butch nacque a Beaver nello Utah il 15 Aprile 1866. Era l'ultimo di 13 figli di una famiglia di mormoni. Trascorse la sua adolescenza presso il ranch di Circleville nello Utah. Qui conobbe un navigato cowboy chiamato Mike Cassidy. Mike ebbe una notevole influenza sul ragazzo instradandolo all’ arte della rapina.
