Boutros-Ghali nasce al Cairo il 14 novembre 1922 da un'abbiente famiglia cristiana copta (Boutros, o meglio Butros, in arabo vuol dire Pietro) che aveva già espresso un primo ministro dell'Egitto, Butros Ghali Pascià, assassinato nel 1910.
