James Mink is a black man living in the 19th century in Canada, a man of affluence. He is married to a white woman and they have a daughter who is black. An American asks for his daughter's hand in marriage and he gives it. But after they leave they discover that he sold her into slavery and there's nothing they can do.
Yet, it is a good story, holding the viewer's interest until the film's end. The movie version has a "happy ending".
