Carol Muske-Dukes (born 1945 in Saint Paul, Minnesota) is an American poet, novelist, essayist, critic, and professor, and the former poet laureate of California (2008–2011).

Known for her sharp portraiture and strong imagery, Muske-Dukes drew on her own experiences teaching in a women’s prison for the bestselling Channeling Mark Twain. In 1972, she created Free Space, a creative writing program at the Women’s House of Detention on Riker’s Island.
Carol Muske-Dukes is a professor at the University of Southern California and a former Poet Laureate of California. She is an author of 9 books of poems - most recent is Blue Rose, which is a 2019 Pulitzer Prize short-list finalist.
