The marriage of Arthur Wellesley to Catherine Sarah Dorothea Pakenham, third daughter of the Earl of Longford, took place on 10 April, 1796 and may be the strangest marriage I’ve come across in the annals of Georgian, Regency and Victorian alliances.
Hon. Catherine „Kitty“ Sarah Dorothea Pakenham (Ehename: Catherine Wellesley, Duchess of Wellington, * 14. Januar 1773; † 24. oder 25. April 1831 in Apsley House, Hyde Park Corner, Mayfair, London, England) war die Tochter von Edward Michael Pakenham, 2. Baron Longford (1743–1792), und Catherine Rowley († 1816).
Wellington first courted Catherine (Kitty) Pakenham in Dublin in 1792. He was a debt-ridden 23-year-old captain of light dragoons. Kitty was the 19-year-old daughter of the Earl of Longford, an Irish peer.
