The Earl was born in Lowndes Square, London, the son of Claude Bowes-Lyon, 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and the former Frances Smith. He married Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck on 16 July 1881 in Petersham, Surrey.The couple had ten children. The Earl would part his moustache in a theatrical, but courteous gesture, before kissing them:

Life. Claude Lyon-Bowes was born in Redbourn, Hertfordshire. He was the second surviving son of Thomas George Lyon-Bowes, Lord Glamis (son of the 11th Earl ), and his wife Charlotte Grimstead. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Lyon-Bowes, 11th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Louisa Rodney Carpenter.
La contea venne accettata a partire dal 1937 anche nella Parìa inglese, quando la figlia di Claude Bowes-Lyon, XIV Conte di Strathmore e Kinghorne e di Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck, Elizabeth, dopo aver sposato il duca di York Alberto d'Inghilterra , divenne regina consorte.[1]
