In 2015, Garvey announced that he would be releasing his first solo studio album while continuing his duties as Elbow's lead songwriter. The resulting album, Courting the Squall, was released on 30 October 2015, by Polydor Records in the UK.

14 lug 2016 · Courting the Squall is een album dat vooral in het teken staat van de overpeinzingen die door de gedachten van Guy Garvey heen stromen. De poëtische teksten zoeken de diepgang in de liefde en de herinneringen aan vervlogen tijden, al weet Guy deze maar ten dele aan de oppervlakte te krijgen.
The solo-album-while-parent-band-is-still-a-going-concern is not an easy release to pull off, but given that Guy Garvey is vocalist for the seemingly democratic and mutually supportive Elbow, he had a better chance than most, and Courting the Squall succeeds in doing just enough to set it apart from Elbow, yet be familiar enough to attract the band’s fans too.
