Founded in the 17th century by Sir John Stradling and refounded by Sir Leoline Jenkins, it had close links with Jesus College, Oxford. The school took both boarders and day boys. Famous old boys include actor Anthony Hopkins, poet Alun Lewis and TV presenter Patrick Hannan. The main school buildings were located in Church Street, Cowbridge.

The Grammar School was established on Church Street in the early-17th century. In the mid-19th century, it was re-built in Gothic style. In terms of local politics, so strong was the opposition of Cowbridge grammar school to adopting the county scheme, that this resulted in Glamorgan being the last county to adopt the provisions of the 1889 Act. This controversy propitiated the foundation of the new girls' school, aided by a local benefactor.
