continue to another bastion in the Grammar School garden. Go through the Southgate to inspect Cowbridge Grammar School. The school was founded in 1608 by the Stradlings of St Donats, and was owned by Jesus College, Oxford, from 1685 to 1918. Jesus College paid for the present buildings - now in a sorry state - to be put up in 1847-52.

Founded in the 17th century by Sir John Stradling and refounded by Sir Leoline Jenkins, it had close links with Jesus College, Oxford. The school took both boarders and day boys. Famous old boys include actor Anthony Hopkins, poet Alun Lewis and TV presenter Patrick Hannan. The main school buildings were located in Church Street, Cowbridge.
Cowbridge is a significant planted 'new town' on the old Roman road, the Via Julia Maritima. Granted a charter by Richard de Clare, the Lord of Glamorgan in 1254, its central part was walled in the 13th century but it is best known for its town plan with burgage plots at right angles to the High Street, where merchants built their houses and workshops.
