Sposata dal 1932 con il maggiore, e poi segretario di Stato, Sir Frederick Arthur Montagne Browning, ha vissuto tra Londra, la Cornovaglia e Alessandria d’Egitto, dove ha scritto Rebecca, la prima moglie, la sua opera più conosciuta, portata sul grande schermo da Alfred Hitchcock.
