David Emmett Cockrum (/ ˈ k ɒ k r ə m /; November 11, 1943 – November 26, 2006) was an American comics artist known for his co-creation of the new X-Men characters Nightcrawler, Storm, Colossus, and Mystique, as well as the antiheroine Black Cat.

After first learning of the new X-Men series in 1972, Dave Cockrum designed a black, female member called the Black Cat, who wore a collar with a bell on it. Her power was that she could turn into any cat, from a house-cat to a panther, and she could also half-transform into a humanoid cat.
Dave Cockrum was a writer and artist for Marvel Comics. He was most widely recognized for his contributions to the "All-New, All-Different" X-Men. He died November 28th, 2006.
Best known for his defining runs on the Legion of Superheroes and The X-Men, he has worked on a ton of titles in his 30-year career as an industry professional.
