David Politzer and Frank Wilczek, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2004 for discoveries regarding the strong force —the nuclear force that binds together quarks (the smallest building blocks of matter) and holds together the nucleus of the atom.
He received his Ph.D. in 1966 from the University of California, Berkeley. Before joining KITP, he was the Thomas Jones Professor of Mathematical Physics at Princeton University. Gross was awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics (with Politzer and Wilczek) “for the discovery of asymptotic freedom in the theory of the strong interaction.”.
