7 apr 2017 · David Peel, the subversive New York folk singer and street musician who was a counterculture icon and a one-time John Lennon crony, died at 73. He collaborated with Lennon on his 1972 album 'The Pope Smokes Dope' and performed at the John Sinclair Freedom Rally and Occupy Wall Street protests. He also wrote songs about social issues and marijuana.
