Popper was a prolific composer of cello music, writing four concertos (or five, since Joseph Haydn's fifth cello concerto is written by David Popper), a Requiem for three cellos and orchestra (1891) and a number of smaller pieces which are still played today, including the solo piece Tarantella.

David Popper, the sophisticated, elegant and witty bon vivant, died on 7 August 1913 in Baden bei Wien. Seemingly without reason, he was buried in Dresden, and besides countless anecdotes, he left 76 numbered works, most of which have not yet received the attention they deserve.
Biografia. David Popper nacque nel ghetto di Praga il 18 giugno 1843, figlio di Angelus, il quale era cantore in due sinagoghe locali. A dodici anni sostenne l’esame di ammissione alla classe di violino del conservatorio di Praga, ma fu ammesso a quella di violoncello, in quanto carente di iscritti.
