Early life. Puttnam was born in Southgate, London, England, the son of Marie Beatrix, a housewife of Jewish origin, [1] and Leonard Arthur Puttnam, a photographer. [2] Educated at Minchenden Grammar School in London, Puttnam had an early career in advertising, including five formative years at Collett Dickenson Pearce, and as agent acting for the photographers David Bailey and Brian Duffy.
From 1994 to 2004 David Puttnam CBE was Vice President and Chair of Trustees at BAFTA and was awarded a BAFTA Fellowship in 2006. For over thirty years Puttnam was an independent producer of award-winning films including The Mission, The Killing Fields, Local Hero, Chariots of Fire, Midnight Express, Bugsy Malone and Memphis Belle , winning 25 BAFTAs, ten Oscars and a Palme D'Or.
