Affetto da gravi turbe ossessive, il giovane David (Haas) è ricoverato dalla madre nella clinica psichiatrica del dr. Miller (Poitier) e grazie al suo aiuto si avvicina a una malata coetanea, Lisa (Murphy). I due giovani s'innamorano, ma Lisa, tormentata dal pensiero che lui possa andarsene, fugge dall'istituto.
