Sutherland ble født i Saint John i New Brunswick i Canada og vokste opp i Bridgewater i Nova Scotia. Han fikk sin første deltidsjobb da han var 14 år, som nyhetskorrespondent for den lokale radiostasjonen CKBW Radio i Bridgewater. Han studerte ved Victoria College ved University of Toronto og tok mastergrad både i engineering og drama.
