Bush got his first mandolin in 1964 at age 11, a Gibson A-50 model. A year or so later, in response to an advertisement in Sing Out! magazine, 13-year-old Sam attended the first multi-day bluegrass festival which was held in Fincastle, Virginia. The main impetus for his attending was to be around other mandolin players.

Sam Bush (Bowling Green, 13 aprile 1952) è un musicista statunitense. Nato a Bowling Green, nel Kentucky, Bush è cresciuto ascoltando musica country e bluegrass attraverso la collezione di dischi di suo padre Charlie, e guardando lo show televisivo "Flatt & Scruggs", in cui i celebri musicisti Earl Scruggs e Lester Flatt si esibivano in brani prevalentemente bluegrass.
